The Falkland Islands are located about 300 miles (480 kilometers) from the east coast of Argentina. They are made up of two main islands (East Falkland and West Falkland) and several hundred smaller ones. Britain claimed the islands in 1765, but the Spanish later took them over and named them the Islas Malvinas.
